...this might be amusing--look at that wild and crazy Speaker of ours--if Gingrich weren't the second most powerful person in the country. Attention-deficit disorder and franchising your name while it's hot are troubling characteristics in someone who is speed-cutting $200 billion from such programs as Medicaid, Head Start, Amtrak, public television, water quality and air-traffic control. Many citizens don't think these cuts make sense at all, but all citizens should wonder whether it isn't reckless to make them while making a personal fortune at the same time. Being Speaker used...
...night they appear, prefects lead theircharges on a wild goose chase through the Yard, looking for the Yard Plate, a fancy silverplatter. With 1,600 bodies tearing through thedark and screamingHolworthy/Lionel/Wigglesworth Rules!, it isanybody's guess who wins. Sometimes the outcomevaries. Nativist gardeners are looking to plant only native plants, nothing that would not have been here before the colonists arrived. Herb gardeners can choose from 10 different kinds of basil, including licorice. Others want to plant "wild gardens" that are designed to provide food for critters. And there are ways to make more critters part of natural dacor: the Sharper Image catalog offers three different sizes of bat houses built of red cedar. The company claims each bat will consume up to 600 mosquitoes an hour; the biggest...
Your article on U.S. air force safety and charges of cover-ups in crash probes, "Way,Way Off in the Wild Blue Yonder" [THE MILITARY, May 29], was right on. In 1986, when I was stationed at Washington State's Fairchild Air Force Base, a KC-135A aircraft crashed. As in the case of the June 1994 crash you described, this plane was practicing for an air show. The casualties might have been far greater than the six who were killed: the plane crashed into a field surrounded on three sides by maintenance buildings, near liquid oxygen-service areas...
