Complex, rocky and at times perplexing, a week's worth of horsing around at the sumptuous Home Ranch is the latest outdoor pursuit in management training. In today's corporate-training world, there are the old standbys like rock climbing, rope mazes and Dale Carnegie. But a wide variety of other programs have developed that purport to impart management wisdom: martial arts, golf (don't ask), rhythmic drumming (ditto), paintball and treasure hunts among them. Some trainers use improvisational comedy to supposedly unleash the inner Jay Leno in trainees, while other consultants bring along wild animals to scare...
...unleashing the media. Instead, Hu appears to favor a mixture of moral suasion (he's launched internal reeducation campaigns for party cadres), and the punishment of a few to scare the many. Of course, in a system where corruption is endemic, it's a fair bet he has a wide range of potential targets on which to showcase his resolve. And if scapegoats are needed, it's certainly to his advantage to choose individuals loyal to his predecessor who may hold positions in which he'd like put his own allies - particularly in preparation for the horse-trading ahead...

The justification for cancelling Thursday’s festivities, then, rests on the Masters’ unease at the thought of supporting two campus-wide parties in a single week, which would never even be considered for any other week of the year. But if there ever is a weekend that deserves special treatment by administrators, the weekend of The Game...
...Unseating a storied incumbent with a record approval rating and the loyalty of 45 million poor people who benefit from his wide-ranging assistance programs was always a tall order for Geraldo Alckmin, the candidate of the centrist Brazilian Social Democratic Party. Alckmin benefited when members of Lula's Workers' Party (PT) were caught trying to buy documents to smear electoral rivals. The scandal helped Alckmin eat into Lula's lead and deny him the 50%-plus-one margin needed to claim outright victory in the first round of voting, which gave Alckmin 41.6% to Lula's 48.6%. But that...
