Joseph Buell Ely, 75, white-thatched Boston lawyer and textile executive (American Woolen Co.), twice (1931-35) Democratic Governor of Massachusetts, once (1944) anti-Roosevelt candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination; of complications six months after a brain operation; in Westfield, Mass. At the 1932 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Joe Ely nominated his longtime friend Al Smith, gave reluctant support to Franklin Roosevelt only after F.D.R. became the convention's choice.
