SINCE the days of E. Rider Haggard's orientally imaginative novels, weird, mystical, and scented with the unfathomable agelessness of Asia, there has appeared scarcely another novelist whose taste for the exotic mystery of much infinities has carven a readable story. Quite in this older, manner Mr. Merritt has harked back to Ancient Babylon and spun an interesting and curious, if not so successful, fantasy. Unfortunately the latter's hero makes his first blow in a luxurious apartment in contemporary New York and after demolishing an archeological monolith from Babylon, is whisked back a score of centuries without the slightest...
...Theatre Guild has staged this weird adventure with all the cunning resources at its command. Alfred Lunt, Lynn Fontanne, Blanche Yurka, George Gaul, Helen Westley, Dwight Frye, Albert Bruning and other notables head an apparently endless cast. Acting, setting and direction are superb. Goat Song can be set down as an inspired attempt to cage within the worldly walls of the theatre an intangible and hopelessly unanswerable abstraction...
...poetical handling of our somewhat prosaic mother tongue. I think your ability in this line reached its climax in your issue of Nov. 16, p. 20, col. 3, when you say, "The thunder that darkly strode from the organ pipes . ..." Nearby, anchored in the blaze of ocean, is the naval transport, Chaumont, nest of balloons, dirigibles, airplanes. Both the Swarthmore men and the U. S. Navy men are preparing for three weird minutes on Jan. 14, when the sun will be blackened, the earth move to the dance of cosmic shadows. The terror of chattering natives will be reported by the scientists at a total eclipse of the sun, the second in a year. (The other eclipse took place on the morning...
...most discerning priest would need years to explore before they could half understand it. The attachment was a pitiable thing, the horrible confusion of a sexually uneducated boy and a socially uneducated girl with greed and social position and an uncertain racial standard and a kind of weird search for happiness. . . . Apparently his family lacked both sympathetic wisdom and practical judgment. But the lawyers were not emotionally involved. They could have kept their heads, and if they were any good they could and would have talked like a Dutch uncle to these pathetic people stumbling to their ruin. They should...
