...five men sent to first base on called balls, while Downer did not send a single man to his base on four balls. Harvard's errors, however, were all made at critical moments, and her coaching, moreover, was poor. The batting showed some improvement but that it is still weak is shown by the fact that Harvard had nine men left on bases. Trafford and Stetson were the only infielders not to make errors. Dean made one or two brilliant plays at second base, and then some bad errors; his batting was very weak. At short stop Bates accepted three...
Harvard played her first regularly scheduled game yesterday afternoon on Jarvis field. The visiting team from Tufts college played a very fair game, but were weak at the bat. Harvard also showed up strongly in whatever fielding there was to be done, but batted very poorly. Outside of batting errors the home team made only one error, and that an excusable one. The batteries, however, on both sides did most of the work, and up to the last inning hardly a man was put out by the Tufts nine on fielding chances. Meade, formerly of the Holy Cross college team...
...changes in the nine and new men will be tried in several positions. The game, however, was on the whole encouraging. The team played well together, kept cool at critical points, and ran bases with considerable dash. The battery work was good. The batting on the contrary was wretchedly weak. Not only did only four men make safe hits, but fourteen struck out. If the men had hit the ball, the chances would be better for a strong batting team, but with only two or three exceptions they either struck out or knocked weak flies to the outfield. The great...
...juniors rowed every day until Saturday, when they took a rest till yesterday afternoon. The men are heavy, clumsy, and new. They may more reasonably fear to be last than hope to be first. Their barge is very badly rigged. The outriggers are so weak that they cannot hold the oars firmly against the water. Of course they will get into a shell soon but their debut is likely to be tragic. Every man has plenty of faults and some of the new men are very rough. The men fail to row the stroke well out and get forward promptly...
...field have been trained in batting at the nets. Last Saturday a picked nine was chosen to play the Wollastons a practice game. Seven innings were played and the Harvard men showed up fairly well both in the field and at the bat. The Wollastons were a weak team, however, and the Harvard nine was only a provisional one. The men were, Howland, L. S., pitcher, Piper, '90, first base, Wrenn, '92, second base, Trafford, '93, third base, McCoy, '90, short-stop, Codman, '90, left-field, Upton, '93, centre-field, Linn, '90, right-field. Downer did good work...
