Yesterday afternoon the crew tried the tank. It was not at all satisfactory. The oars were horribly clumsy, the volume of water to be moved was too great and the current did not move with any freedom, nor did the rowing offer any resemblance to boating. The clumsiness of the oars was made by cutting a large hole in the blade and tacking upon the remaining portions thick strips of wood.
