...personnel in the movie "Contact" delivering fictional news reports about a message from an alien civilization. Earlier, Shaw had appeared in "The Lost World" reporting that dinosaurs had run amok in San Diego. But "Contact" came under special scrutiny because CNN's parent company, Time Warner, also owns Warner Bros., which produced the film. Johnson said he wasn't pressured to lend his journalists to the movie. "It has created a concern among the professional community that we are being manipulated by Time Warner," he said. "We are not. Categorically we are not." He added, however: "It's fair...

...tactic Zemeckis used in "Forrest Gump," where the protagonist was cut into historical footage so that he appeared to be talking to everyone from LBJ to Nixon. Clinton lawyer Charles Ruff says Zemeckis effectively gave the President a role in the film without his authorization, and has sent Warner Brothers a letter charging the film improperly manipulated the President's statements and used his image for commercial purposes. ...network, the buzz continues. Although Westinghouse said the network is not for sale, impatient Westinghouse shareholders may be sick of the underperforming network. If CBS does go on sale, Gates may have some competition on his hands. Seagram, owner of Universal Studios, recently dumped a large chunk of Time Warner and has reportedly expressed interest in CBS. In a classic non denial-denial, Microsoft said that such a takeover might endanger its $200 million MSNBC network partnership NBC. Let's see: endanger a dollar to capture...
