...airplay on vh1, an American music-video channel intended for an older audience than mtv's. The band Portishead smoothly combines feathery, angelic vocals with mournful, cathartic lyrics. The genre-challenging Tricky draws freely and creatively from soul and hip-hop, with a dash of alternative-rock abrasiveness. And vocalist Terence Trent D'Arby, who burst onto the scene in 1987, is back with a new CD, Vibrator, that tempers his arty brashness with newfound maturity...
...version of Sondheim's Pretty Women (from the musical Sweeney Todd) that is mature and mysterious, dark and sweet. Grover Washington Jr., with charismatic sax runs, turns the understated melody of Every Day a Little Death (from A Little Night Music) into something direct and forceful. And Bryson and vocalist Nancy Wilson transform Loving You (from Passion) into a soul-bearing vocal duet that haunts and enchants. Show tunes have rarely sounded so rich, so smart and so good...
...program gradually began attracting better guests and a bigger following. Irish vocalist Sinead O'Connor was featured in a 1991 show, and progressive rockers R.E.M. appeared later that same year. Other A-list musicians--Sting, Eric Clapton, Arrested Development--soon followed. Older performers went on Unplugged to revive careers, younger rockers to boost new ones. Bruce Springsteen, 45, added four awards to his pile for Streets of Philadelphia, and Tony Bennett, 68, picked up two, Album of the Year and Traditional Pop Vocalist, for his MTV Unplugged. They all looked like kids, however, compared with...

The album, Feed the Fire, is titled after a Geri Allen composition--a rare sign of tribute from Dame Carter, who is widely known as one of the toughest and most critical taskmasters in jazz. Carter's tyrannical ways were amply demonstrated in her own appearance at the Regattabar last year, when she lambasted her bass player on stage for not getting the changes right. Unlike the poor bassist, Allen was not cowed by Carter's aggressiveness. The level...
