Catherine McCormack delivers a refreshing, funny and inspired performance in Marshal Herskovitz's new period piece. As Veronica Franco, a lower-class beautiful girl turned high-class court prostitute, McCormack leads a well-assembled cast in this slightly flawed--yet worth seeing--film about life as a courtesan in 16th century Venice. Prefaced by both opening and closing textual summations, the film clearly advances a social agenda--in this respect, it slides by with an average grade. The cleverness of the rest of its script and the excellence of the acting, however, save Dangerous Beauty and make it shine. Marc...

...eclectic group of British university students: Sarah Tudor, a wistful teacher-in-training prone to occasional lapses in consciousness; Terry Worth, soon to be the bohemian film critic of his generation; Robert, one of Terry's closest friends; Gregory Dudden, a cold-hearted, egocentric medical student; and Veronica, the militant lesbian whose dreams of work in the theater always remained unfulfilled. With the schedule in flux, that show will have a tougher time finding an audience. Fortunately for NBC, it still has the rest of the season to experiment. It could build up Frasier or 3rd Rock by putting them after Seinfeld. Meanwhile, Just Shoot Me, a modest success starring Laura San Giacomo...

...course, the best way to win viewers is to discover shows they want to watch. And each network has some bright spots to point to this fall. ABC's Dharma & Greg, the flower-child-marries-lawyer sitcom, has justified its favorable preseason press and is winning its time period. Veronica's Closet, starring Kirstie Alley, has a fail-safe time slot on NBC between Seinfeld and ER, and it has kept more of Seinfeld's audience than many other shows similarly blessed. Ally McBeal, Fox's Monday-night comedy-drama, looks like another success...
