...concerns. Musicians will always find ways to make money, Clarke insists, by sales of T shirts and other ancillary items, perhaps, or even voluntary payments from their fans. As for terrorism and child pornography, he doesn't believe humanity should be denied free speech because "a few people might use it for something unsavory." Ultimately, Clarke says, Freenet makes debates of this kind moot. "If you had to convince everyone freedom of information is a good thing, it would never happen," he says. "The point is, I made it happen...

...doesn't claim to own it, he can't sell it.) He spends much of his free time--along with volunteer code writers from as far away as Stockholm and Houston--working out Freenet's kinks. It's in a creaky early version right now, so hard to use that only some 35,000 people have hooked up. High on Clarke's to-do list: create a search engine so users won't need to consult informal lists like "Steve's Key Index" that volunteers have assembled...

...where Federal Trade Commission Chairman Robert Pitofsky calls the wave of mergers "unprecedented," regulators are scrutinizing matchups like AOL-Time Warner for indications that the partners might use their clout to deny rivals access to their networks. In part to fend off regulators, AOL last week filed plans to open its wildly popular instant-messaging system to other Internet providers. A Vivendi-Seagram deal would probably face less U.S. scrutiny, since most of its distribution channels would be in Europe. European regulators, however, will take a hard look, just as they said they would do last week with Time Warner...

...SMEAR" FOR THE BREAST Since most breast tumors seem to originate in the milk ducts, why not just remove fluid from the ducts and check the cells for signs of abnormal growth? (That's basically the strategy doctors and other health-care providers use during a Pap smear to check the cervix for signs of abnormal growth before the cells become dangerous.) If there is a problem, so the theory goes, it could be traced to a particular duct, which would then be carefully monitored for signs of malignancy. One major drawback: seemingly abnormal results can be triggered by changes...

...cliche--gay guy, meet the Asian girl; white beatnik, meet the alcoholic. (This year's gay guy, before coming out to his housemates, coyly announced he had "a secret," and regular viewers who had witnessed previous coming outs knew in a split second what it would be. If you use that line by the show's ninth season, you'd better have a severed head in your luggage.) But that casting has also proved genuinely worthwhile. Pedro Zamora explicitly used his stint on the series' third season to raise awareness of AIDS, which claimed his life shortly after the show...
