...Gardener, an exhilarating take on John Le Carré's novel, by Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles (City of God) and screenwriter Jeffrey Caine, is one of five Fiennes films to be released in 2005 (see box). He's a decadent art historian in Chromophobia (still awaiting a U.S. distributor), an upper-class satire that involved three of the six Fiennes siblings: sister Martha wrote and directed; brother Magnus composed the music. (The brood also includes Joseph, who starred in Shakespeare in Love...
...dense murk that envelops London but settles thickest around the High Court of Chancery. Out of it swirls a teeming cloud of characters and incidents: a lawsuit that has been droning on for years, now grown "so complicated that no man alive knows what it means." An upper-class lady hiding a dark secret. Orphaned children, greedy adults, blackmailing lawyers, a detective story, a reunion and several untimely deaths (one of them by spontaneous combustion). The sheer scope of Charles Dickens' great novel Bleak House presents a daunting task for any adapter. But the BBC version that begins next week...
Just so. Still, there have been moments worth the thousand-and-some pages of skulk and murk. To watch the original documentary (which accompanied 28 Up in its New York City premiere) is to be charmed into suspending awareness of the depressing trajectory of British life since then. The succeeding films follow that arc; they might be called 14 Perpendicular, 21 Tilt...
...Like Botox, another Hollywood trend has taken off among average, albeit affluent, Joes: the goody bag. Despite airlines reducing leg room and charging for food in economy class, three major carriers have introduced luxury goody bags for their first- and business-class passengers. Virgin Atlantic now gives upper-class customers on all flights a travel-accessories bag by Savile Row tailor Ozwald Boateng, which holds eponymously branded socks and either cuff links, a hand mirror or a key chain. Continental's U.S. transcontinental first-class passengers have received fragrances by Prada and Ghirardelli chocolates. Fliers in United's U.S transcontinental...
