...little to rescue the movie from the monotony of the story line. The Kilrathi make a disappointingly infrequent appearance. Even when they do show up, they appear as silly rubbery monsters, not the fearsome feline-race implied by the Confederation's dread. Similarly, the scarce combat sequences are unspectacular. In fact, the combat usually consists of the heroes shooting at tiny targets on a screen, then flying back to base. There is little of the close-up dog fighting that could have brought at least some suspense to the action scenes...

Cate Blanchett, Elizabeth: In a unspectacular movie filled with incoherent gaps of logic, Blanchett provided the unifying arc. There is no doubt that her performance is a fierce, brave display of subtlety and strength. But Blanchett is foreign--and Gwyneth Paltrow is not. (Remember, this is the American Academy of Arts and Sciences...

In the unspectacular Spanish Basque city of Bilbao, architect Frank Gehry has deposited a branch of New York City's Guggenheim Museum of Art that is a tribute to the power of that great contemporary idea, "Stop making sense." ...same character, whether in his movies or in the weekly episodes of "ER." He is a macho guy, attractive, self-confident, somewhat crude, gruff on the outside, moderately warm inside. And, according to Richmond, Clooney can get away with the monotony because "there is something reassuring about George's unspectacular but classic character in an age when the screen is increasingly peopled by young guys...who haven't lived--not really lived--more than a day and a half their whole lives and are therefore about as inherently interesting as garden slugs." Which means, to take this up a level...

...China's most divisive modern tragedies, was the turning point in Jiang's career. Three weeks after the protests were quelled with violence and bloodshed, Deng named Jiang the new General Secretary of the Communist Party. The choice was a surprise. Jiang's record in Shanghai was solid, if unspectacular, but in the prism of Chinese politics he had other things going for him. He was now a favorite of the Old Guard. During the early days of the Tiananmen protests, he had sacked the editor of a daringly liberal, independent newspaper in Shanghai called the World Economic Herald...
