What a way to begin the fall! Perennial college-football power University of Michigan was ranked No. 5 in the preseason polls. It paid little Appalachian State University of Boone, N.C., about $400,000 to have its football team visit Ann Arbor to serve as a season-opening tune-up for the Wolverines. In a stunning upset, Appalachian State won 34-32-- kicking a field goal with 26 sec. left, then blocking a Michigan field-goal attempt on the game's last play...
...preseason tune-up, junior Louis Caputo wrestled to a ninth-place finish at the Junior World Championships hosted by the China Agricultural University this Sunday in Beijing. After defeating Canada’s Cotlen Woznow, 3-1, 4-0, Caputo fell to Anzor Urishev of Russia in a shutout. In his match against China’s B. Huwatibieke in the wrestlebacks, Caputo relied on superior...

After some serious sobbing, Williams had what she calls her "Rocky moment." The next day, she stuffed a credit card into her sports bra--"in case I got thirsty"--and ran the steps of a Tasmanian park for hours...

Crimson tracksters competed strong, with junior Clara Blattler posting the only women’s win of the day, taking first in the pole vault. Sophomore Brittan Smith took second in the long jump with a 5.42-meter leap, while junior Danielle Mirabal landed at fourth in the same event with a 5.24-meter jump. Sophomore Aishlinn O’Callaghan finished second...
