Hoboken-born, educated at Yale "Sheff," Columbia, Kiel, Göttingen, Berlin and Vienna, he taught pathology, became director of the Bellevue Hospital laboratories, was appointed Chief Medical Examiner by Mayor Hylan in 1918.
