...Wednesday morning youth rally at Madison Square Garden. A crowd of 75,000 waited impatiently at Yankee Stadium, occasionally cheering a white-mitered bishop whom they mistakenly thought to be the Pope. John Paul finally appeared, 45 minutes late, in his white "Popemobile" (a rebuilt Ford Bronco truck) that slowly circled the field as the standing Pope extended his arms, first to one side, then the other, in blessing. People far out of his range of vision in the upper stands felt impelled to wave back, as if the Pope were greeting them alone...

...very earnest movie, the heroine, Nicole (Nathalie Nell), is proceeding peacefully along a country road at twilight. Abruptly she is pushed from her motorbike by one of the occupants of a closed van, abducted to a lonely place and then raped by all four of the men in the truck. This scene is long and harrowing, brutal and humiliating, and feminist Director Bellon does not blink at showing us, in excruciating detail, every moment of Nicole's ordeal. ...noon with recorded choral music. The verdict--great sound quality but a little soft, a defect that has the sound engineers from Donovan and Co. scrambling. They have to do a good job. After all, they took roll after roll of publicity photos Sunday night with their truck in the foreground, the altar behind. "Test 1, 2, 3, Test 1, 2, 3," echoes through the park. And the crowd, satisfied, cheers...

...garbed in the traditional black and purple robes. Politicians in pin-stripes and whoever else managed to nab a ticket to the airport ceremonies. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy '54 (D-Mass.) steps in with a big smile, Joan in tow. Gov. Edward J. King rounds the big green flatbed truck that the pool #1 photographers are fighting for space on. The truck and one of the nine press buses will join the motorcade. The rest of us will go right to the Common. A small army of state police and cars stands guard. It's raining harder. The photographers...
