Coming Back. Deeply worried, a select circle of highly critical military governors, Cabinet ministers and troop commanders held a secret meeting with Rojas. Rojas was instructed...
Acting is, with one reservation, on a distinguished level. Paul Rogers, as Macbeth, is marvelous. Probably the outstanding member of the troop, he grows with Macbeth to a superb fiery level. His violent face and boiling characterization is what the role of Macbeth deserves. Coral Browne's Lady Macbeth, though, was intense but somewhat bouncy. She looked wrong, except, perhaps, in her sleep-walking scene. To fulfill my demands for the role of Lady Macbeth would take a rare actress, which, I am afraid, Miss Browne is not. ...McMurdo Sound one day this month, Correspondent Edwin Rees of TIME'S Washington Bureau learned firsthand about the dread Antarctic whiteout, the dazzle of reflected light that erases all landmarks and horizons. It was, said an airman, "like flying inside a pingpong ball." The big Air Force troop carrier groped for the icy runway, plowed into a snowbank and slithered over the ice with nose down and tail high. "The feel and sound of 150,000 pounds of airplane sliding out of control is an experience I would like only once," said Rees. Fortunately, the crew and Correspondent Rees...
...acceptably settled; last season the baseball crowd was not sufficiently satisfied until Ted Williams, after again proving himself one of the great ballplayers of all time, condescended to spit at them, one and all. But this winter the fans are having a miserable time. Night after night, as they troop into the hugely nondescript Boston Garden, they find nothing to grouse about. Reason: the Boston Celtics are bouncing along toward the National Basketball Association title, and the Boston Bruins, after seven seasons of mediocrity or worse, are skating hell-bent for the National Hockey League championship...
...Defense Secretary Charlie Wilson decided to try again, whipped off a directive placing MATS under a "single manager" (Air Force Secretary Donald Quarles), and at the same time increasing the present MATS aircraft strength from 534 to 717. New planes will come from the Navy (67) and three heavy troop-carrier wings (some 100 Globemaster null from the Air Force's Tactical Air Command. Thus MATS, whose M-day job hitherto was designed to support TAC and other airlift facilities, will now have the capacity to drop troops directly on target, as well as the job of performing peacetime...
