Sometimes the thieves' ingenuity has been almost as quaint as their plunder. It has been reported that in several cases they hired helicopters to pluck their booty from the roofs of houses and barns. Robert Eldred of Dennis, Mass., returned from a trip to find that his square-rigger ship vane had vanished. Six months later, it was traced with the help of an antique dealer to a banker's house in Florida. Eldred flew to Florida and, taking two extra seats in the plane, returned home with his antique. ...through the bus collecting wallets and purses. The haul was only $835, but it reflected a savvy knowledge of gambling odds on the part of the robber. He took his loot before the passengers had a chance to lose it to the casinos and make the return trip flat. Greyhound was, understandably, less than amused. ...page section on making genuine French breads with all-purpose American flour. The basic process takes seven hours at the very least. But anyone who perseveres will be rewarded by the characteristic chewy loaf with the crackly crust that Frenchmen can acquire for a two-minute trip to the local boulangerie. Other lengthy sections in Julia II deal with the production of charcuterie (sausages) and puff pastry...
