...developed, primarily by Japanese surgeons. Dr. Yasuto Itami, of Tokyo, recently designed and implanted a titanium and polyethylene thigh bone that can be precisely adjusted to fit the patient when it is installed. Other orthopedists are using cords of woven Dacron-which is chemically inert and thus will not trigger an immune response -to repair or replace damaged tendons. Dr. William Harrison Jr. of Tulsa, Okla., uses Dacron tubing to repair separated shoulders; the material forms a scaffolding or framework upon which new ligament can grow and is so effective that one 17-year-old patient went back to competitive...
...liberal vision is woven of three ideals: justice, libertarianism, and pacifism. He values social order as a guarantee against violence and deplores the "urge to reach for the dagger" on both the right and left. In his essay on Kennedy's death "We All Had a Finger on That Trigger," Stone writes: "It is not just the ease in obtaining guns, it is the ease in obtaining excuses, that fosters assassination...
Such precautions can trigger a kind of terror psychosis. At Rome recently, the pilot of an inbound Indonesian air liner mistakenly signaled an emergency. As soon as the plane landed, it was surrounded by fire trucks and a dozen police Jeeps. Guns ready, police waited for skyjackers to act. Passengers and crew, meanwhile, presumed that something horrendous was happening outside, and they refused to debark. In spite of radio communications between plane and tower, nearly an hour passed before the confusion was cleared up and Fiumicino Airport returned to normal...

At the heart of Allen's appeal, of course, is the schlep, the cumsy neurotic from Brooklyn who's always victimized but likeable. The endearment generally doesn't trigger pathos, however, as with Chaplin (although Allen's capable of that). he shuns the universal in favor of something more contemporary, more esoteric, keener. The source of pleasure is the basic I-thought-I-was-messed-up-but-look-at-this-guy response--a comforting thought. But you never feel sorry for him. He understands somehow...
...blacks complained that they were too often the targets of the unit's quick-on-the-trigger whites; in their first four months in action, STRESS officers killed eight blacks. Young promised to disband STRESS, put more cops on the beat, and decentralize the 5,500-member force by setting up 50 neighborhood police stations. In the end, the election was decided chiefly along racial lines: 92% of the blacks voted for Young; 91% of the whites for Nichols. In a city now more than 50% black, Young won with a 14,000-vote margin...
