Things get murkier when researchers look at the BRCA mutations. Hundreds of base pairs may be strung along genes like Christmas-tree lights, but not every blown bulb affects the strand the same way. More than 200 mutations have been identified on the two BRCA genes, and one new study found that while BRCA2 mutations will show up on a test, they may be less likely to lead to disease than mutations on BRCA1 in young women...

...accused the Clinton Administration of ignoring the practice. Wu, who heads a group dedicated to exposing forced-labor in China's prisons, said the products made involuntarily by prisoners included office supplies, sport shirts with Playboy, Esprit and Arnold Palmer labels, auto parts for American cars, and even Christmas tree lights. President Clinton plans to renew China's most-favored-nation trade status, despite continuing allegations of human rights abuses. Under current procedures, U.S. customs officials find it difficult to investigate allegations concerning such prison labor because they must ask permission to inspect suspect plants. ...Love has a voice rich with dark shadings and rural twang. She calls her music Afro/Celtic, but it's mostly front-porch folk with a few twists. One song, Simple, offers up a mix of blues harmonica and funky guitar. Her topics are very coffeehouse--there's a pro-tree song--but there's also a sharp cover of Come As You Are that remakes Kurt Cobain's anguished alternative-rock classic into a plaintive, acoustic plea for self-acceptance. At their best, Love and Indigo Girls sidestep trends and go straight to the heart...

Another lavishly rewarded CEO last year was Lawrence Coss of little known Green Tree Financial, a company based in St. Paul, Minnesota, that finances mobile-home purchases. He was paid $102 million in salary and bonus. He was also given 2 million stock options valued at $35 million, presumably as an incentive. In his case too, shareholders have had much to cheer. They enjoyed a 47% return on their investment last year. But the huge numbers have people edgy. Could Green Tree not recruit a first-rate executive for, say, $50 million? "How much is too much?" asks Patrick McGurn...

...this repertoire of three signature stylistic elements, Lichtenstein adds a new technique, sponge-painting, used for the gently sloping tree in Yellow Cliffs. The lack of control inherent in painting with a sponge risks undermining the impossibly clean finish that has long been a hall-mark of Lichtenstein's canvases. Yet on closer look, the organic matter seems just as mechanical, as if it had been painted with a commercial "do it yourself" home decorating...
