...illustrated than in the 160 paintings, bronzes, jugs, vases and primitive musical instruments on show last week at the Seattle Art Museum, a display ranging from a bird-shaped Chinese ritual vessel done around 1100 B.C. to the hopping-mad, moonstruck sea gulls and cranes of Northwest Moderns Mark Tobey and Morris Graves...
...Oriental, Seattle's Fuller firmly believes that "it is a museum's duty to support local people and to spur local art of quality." As a result, he has played a key role in promoting the Northwest's regional school, which includes such top artists as Tobey, Graves, Kenneth Callahan and Guy Anderson. One Seattle art dealer summed up Patron-Director Fuller's contribution with feeling: "Dr. Fuller has brought art to the Northwest and the art of the Northwest to the world...
Along with such classics as Edward Hopper's Early Sunday Morning and Reginald Marsh's Holy Name Mission, Mark Tobey, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Lee Gatch in particular had succeeded in seizing the spirit of the New World's new worlds (opposite). In their vision of the city, they found something new to conjure with: the starry, neon-lit quality of urban America as it shows itself by night. They portrayed not actual locations so much as vast shadowlands humming with lights and movements. All three pictured truths about the American city which had never been...

Hartley's German Officer deals with a mood, not a visual image. Davis' Eggbeater beats the eggbeater into unrecognizable shape. Hofmann...
...Mark Tobay, 65, began his painting career by copying Satevepost covers, tried painting lamps, then moved to the Northwest and took up art teaching. A trip to China in 1934 turned Tobey from a follower into a force. Learning that Oriental art started with calligraphy, he has ever since been making determined stabs in the direction of ending Occidental art the same way. Tobey is today revered and reviled as the inventor of something called "white writing." Tobey's writing is, of course, quite illegible. Cast in loose, delicate swirls, it can soothe the restless eye as much...
