...Though Brighton Beach is definitely an ensemble show, Eugene's asides are clearly the linchpin holding the plot and the characters together. The cast of seven break into smaller groups for intimate conversations, permutating themselves into complex arrangements so that, by the end of the show, every character has shared something private with every other character. Though certain combinations of actors take longer than others to hit their stride, the relationships created are generally believable. The most central, and most engaging, relationship exists between the two sisters/mothers, played to a wonderful balance of kitsch and sincerity by Scardigli...

...Though the script is not terribly interesting in and of itself, both performers and designers execute their tasks as well as could be asked for. A delightful surprise for a show that, at first, seemed so wrong for the Ex (i.e., so non-experimental), this production is as good as Brighton Beach is likely...

...Fucks Me." Aside from the loungy swing of "Pandy Fackler" and the oddball Jimmy Buffett-meets-"Hotel California" sound of "Bananas and Blow," White Pepper's tracks either subtly ape the Beatles or not-so-subtly ape the alternaballad crowd that wishes they weren't just aping the Beatles. Though Dean and Gene are as keen in their satire and respectable in their musical skill as ever, something from Ween's past albums and raucous live shows is missing on White Pepper, and it's not just the word "fuck" or the hallucinogens.White Pepper doesn't quite have the quirky...

...text, though it generally seems like an ill-conceived improv sketch, does have it high points. Likewise, the cast bravely struggles against the banality of their lines, occasionally achieving something not totally unlike entertainment. Jared Greene '03 was delightfully serious as the misguided mystic, John, and James Crawford '03 nearly succeeded in ripping a character from the script's lifeless caricature, David. While they managed to salvage a performance from their script, others were simply overwhelmed. Caitlin Butler '03 (Tess) and Mia Lozada '03 (Malvolia) saw their talents go to waste, trapped within the confines of one-joke roles. Butler...

...show's inconsistent (though, given the script, largely appropriate) design vacillated between actors who looked like they had just stumbled in from the Yard and actors who looked like they had just stumbled in from burglarizing a costume warehouse. The set and lighting failed to take advantage of the technical capacities of the Agassiz Theatre, allowing for very few interesting visual effects...
