Most of the natives of Alaska are industrious and religious. They are degraded by a superstition which attributes all misfortune to evil spirits. There is a class of "medicine men" who devote their lives to propitiating these evil spirits, and who think to increase their power by eating human corpses Slavery in its worst forms is prevalent all over the country. The masters have entire control over their slaves and often kill a dozen or more as a mere display of wealth. The condition of the women is so wretched that babies are often killed rather than allowed to grow...
...your late issues appeared an editorial charging the members of the Pierian Sodality with gross neglect. The members, I think, will all plead guilty to the charge, but they are undoubtedly justified in their stand to great extent, either by a lack of energy on the part of the management or by a lack of invitations to give concerts in the suburbs of Boston. Last year the Pierian Sodality gave at least ten concerts, outside of Cambridge, and as there always was plenty of jollity after the concert, the men took a great deal of interest in their work...
...first winter meeting is now but a little more than a week off. The faculty, from their close relationship with the students, their intimate knowledge of student-work and student-life should, we think, be competent to regulate and control college government. The statement in regard to "low esteem" for the professors and faculty is somewhat sweeping, although possessing a kernel of truth. It is very much to be regretted that several professors in the last few weeks have been constrained to tell the students...
...meeting yesterday afternoon the captains of the four class crews decided to refuse the Law School crew, which has just been organized, permission to enter the class races next spring. This certainly seems a wise stand to take, and we have no doubt that all who think the matter over will agree with it. There is barely room in the course rowed every year for four crews, especially at the starting point, and a fifth crew would seriously inconvenience all. This is a very strong ground for refusing. And in the second place, a crew from the Law School made...
