Before I leave the topic of the word, of language and of literature, I want to say something about the spoken word. The best speaker I heard in my life was Reinhold Niebuhr, the American theologian and philosopher. I first heard him at Friends' House, London, in July 1946. He spoke for an hour without notes, and he had us in the hollow of his hand. One of his themes was the potential goodness of individual man, and the potential wickedness of collective man. An individual man could become a saint, but collective man was a tough proposition. He broke...
...decades Moral Theologian Charles Curran of the Catholic University of America vexed the Vatican with his liberal ideas on birth control, homosexuality, abortion and divorce. In 1986 Rome declared him unfit to teach in the church's name. The university suspended him last year, but a review committee declared that, while the school's trustees could withdraw Curran's "canonical mission" as a church theologian, they must guarantee his tenure. The trustees (one-third of them bishops) agreed last week, announcing that Curran could teach in an "area of his professional competence," presumably moral theology, but not at the Vatican...
...Cocktail Party is a mature play, and it is appropriate that it is performed by a more mature cast than most Harvard productions (the actors are all Divinity School students who took a class on Eliot as theologian). However, to paraphrase the children's rhyme, when the acting is good, it's very, very good, but when it's bad, it's horrid...
...Moral Majority's preferred candidates. Last month's defeat of Robert Bork, an ideal Supreme Court nominee from the movement's standpoint, further suggested a loss of clout. As for issues like abortion and school prayer, Moral Majority spent millions "without achieving one piece of legislation," observes Evangelical Theologian Carl F.H. Henry. Fundamentalists this year also lost three significant court cases dealing with curriculum grievances against public schools...
Colson's warnings echo a concern that religious conservatives would be reckless to ignore. "Americans are suspicious now of linking 'thus saith the Lord' with political specifics," says Richard Mouw of California's Fuller Theological Seminary. Evangelical Theologian Henry counsels, "You shouldn't say that the Bible requires every legislative position you take. Christians should use reasons that the secular community uses, such as appealing to the greater good for the greater number." Even Falwell agrees that change is nigh. He has always enjoyed having the last word, and once more he has it: "Never again will there...
