...Palestinian sources indicated that at least 10,000 people, mostly civilians, had been killed through out Lebanon, while more than 300,000 had been temporarily or permanently displaced from their homes. In his meetings with U.S. officials last week, Begin hotly insisted that the true figures were about one-tenth of those totals. Estimates compiled by TIME's Jerusalem bureau, based on unofficial figures, military counts and spot checks at hospitals and combat areas, fell between those two tallies...

...Press was the tenth metropolitan editorial voice to be stilled in the past year. The collapse of the Washington Star and Philadelphia Bulletin left those cities at least temporarily with one newspaper ownership. The New York Daily News Tonight and the Minneapolis Star were folded into morning editions published by the same companies; the Des Moines Tribune is scheduled for the same fate. Competing morning and evening news staffs have been merged by owners in Dayton, Duluth, Atlanta and Fort Lauderdale. Fold-or-sell rumors persist for the Hearst-owned Boston Herald American...

The company was in the midst of its second Stravinsky festival, held on the tenth anniversary of the triumphant first one (as well as the centennial of the composer's birth). Proposed by Republican Delbert Latta of Ohio, with the backing of the White House, the plan was the tenth budget that the House had considered in the past three weeks. It was very likely the last real alternative to having no budget at all. This fear of total failure-and of continued castigation by Reagan as the cause of all economic woes-was the key to the congressional vote. "The members perceived that this could be it," said Mississippi Republican Trent Lott. "There was a feeling that we had to pass a budget today." Added Liberal Democrat James Shannon...

...tenth round was more than a pretty good one for Cooney. Momentarily, Holmes seemed fascinated with finding out precisely how hard Cooney really did hit. But by the eleventh, Cooney's fists were drooping steadily, and Holmes danced to the attack again with swift and steady combinations. Then, in the 13th, Cooney was badly stunned, and Holmes began to measure him with the left glove on the shoulder or face (thumb out) and fetch him clouts with the right. Cooney sagged, and by the time Valle made it through the ropes, the challenger had caught a barrage of fierce...
