...broad daylight early last month were shown on Islamic websites being beheaded by militants loyal to al-Qaeda kingpin Abu Mousab al-Zarqawi. Their British colleague faced a similar fate. Two Italian women taken four weeks ago were also reportedly executed, though Rome would not confirm the claims. Ten employees of an Iraqi cell-phone company were abducted in Baghdad and Fallujah. That rebels could so easily stage such brazen attacks has left many observers questioning whether the U.S. can possibly bring sanity--to say nothing of stability--to the country it has inherited...
Another new addition is a 400-foot burlap ceiling, hiding the normal cobweb of lightbulbs and steel catwalks that gives “the Ex” its “experimental” feel. The ceiling, which took approximately ten hours to make and install, gives the stage the rustic feel of rural Spain...
...world. Arafat used the Palestinian Authority treasury as his personal cashbox to buy loyalty and to support a maze of security services. It is estimated that Arafat and his corrupt cronies pocketed almost half of the seven billion dollars in foreign aid contributed to the Palestinian Authority. Sadly, only ten percent of the Palestinian state budget ever reached the residents of the West Bank and Gaza Strip who desperately need basic government services. Sophomore Caroline Simmons posted the only two goals for Harvard in the first half. Simmons gave the Crimson its first point ten minutes into the game, but a subsequent 5-0 run by New Hampshire extended the total to 8-1. Simmons, however, did her best to chip away at the lead, scoring again 17 minutes after her first goal. Freshman Ashley Durepo and Webster each notched a point for the Wildcats...
...scientists studied five point mutations that increases anti-biotic resistance in bacteria by five orders of magnitude. Since the overall mutation requires five sequential steps, there are 120 pathways from the initial, unresistant bacteria to the later drug-resistant bacteria. The study found that of 120 pathways, only ten are feasible. Weinreich has generalized his results to argue that when bacteria independently develop resistance to the same drug, they likely follow similar, if not identical pathways. To visualize this result, picture Harvard Yard during a rainstorm. While a student might take several paths from Thayer to Sever Hall, a majority...
