TWIN PEAKS FIRE WALK WITH ME, Lynch's way-too-late prequel to the 1990 TV series, relates the last days of teen queen Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee). After an agonizing first half-hour designed to empty the theater, Lynch unleashes his patented perfervid style, puts the familiar dwarfs and feebs on display and elicits a nicely horrifying turn from Lee. But despite her commitment to hippiedom, Bubbles still has a lot of internalized racism knocking around in her drug-addled brain. So her Black maid, who is a sort of cross between Aunt Jemima and Medusa, puts a voodoo spell on Bubbies, giving her a mysterious case of 'negrophobia...

In the space of three years, Stephen Petty, an Atlanta theater director, lost his seven closest friends from their teen days in Dallas. The loss of his entire circle -- in effect the loss of much of his personal history -- tumbled him into years of drinking and depression. He still tests negative for the virus. "The irony," he says, "is that I was always the wild one, the instigator...
