...Blodgett Artists in Residence, are available to help student instrumentalists a few weeks out of every semester. But while these events are unique, one-time opportunities for musical enrichment, Harvard musicians say that finding and arranging regular lessons with a private teacher is a more important, and more difficult, task.“If I hadn’t been admitted to the NEC program…finding a teacher in Boston would have been a prime concern,” says Baritone vocalist John Kapusta ’09. Luckily for him, he arrived during a year when...

Based on the recommendation of the Task Force on Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) and the results of an extensive survey of undergraduates’ research experiences, Harvard will launch a 10-week long residential program this summer for students doing on-campus science research. The Program for Research in Science and Engineering (PRISE) will provide housing, some meals, and special lectures for between 100 and 140 Harvard undergraduates who have research jobs lined up with Harvard-affiliated professors in the math and sciences. Before the start of the summer, PRISE will also help students who haven?...

Instead of three new facilities, the University will construct just one 40,000-square foot building on Weld Hill, an approximately 15-acre parcel of land owned by Harvard on the periphery of the arboretum. While members of a community task force did not object to the plans presented at the meeting, they accused the University of neglecting more specific issues of concern. “What I see tonight is a lot of responsiveness from the design standpoints that have already been raised,” said Carter Wilkie, a member...

...researchers must examine at least 300,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in thousands of patients to find the genes that cause disease in humans. “Because of their unique genomic organization, we need about 30 times fewer SNPs and only a few hundred volunteers to accomplish this task in dogs,” Karlsson said in a statement from the institute. According to the new research, dogs have about 19,300 genes. Human beings have about 22,000 genes. Broad Institute researchers are currently working to map an increasing number of mammal genomes, according to Lindblad...
