...AUSTIN: Tapes of Lyndon Johnson made in the summer of 1964 reveal a man who despite his successes, never really felt like he belonged out front. "The South is against me and the North is against me and the Negroes are against me and the press doesn't really have any affection for me," LBJ told associates on the tapes, newly released by Johnson's presidential library in Austin. "I don't think a white Southerner is the man to unite this nation in this hour." When it was pointed out that if he didn't run, Republican Barry Goldwater...
After the 1993 death of his 19-year-old son Patrick in a grain-silo accident, Hayes set up a support group for families of workers killed on the job. He provides counseling on legal rights and helps cut through bureaucratic red tape. The project has so far aided 300 families in 40 states and, says Hayes, "has helped fill the hole that Patrick left...
WHITE PLAINS, New York: Parts of a tape recording containing racial slurs uttered by Texaco executives may have been deleted, says a U.S. prosecutor. Okula said that additional charges may be brought against Richard Lundwall, the Texaco executive who originally made the tapes public, if it can be shown that he was responsible for the suspected deletions. Neither Okula nor Lundwall's attorney, Ethan Levin-Epstein, would comment on which portions...
With DNA testing apparently inconclusive, investigators are pinning hopes on an array of forensic testing, including the garrote and duct tape used to strangle and gag the little girl, and handwriting and handprint analyses of the ransom note. Detectives are using advanced software to inspect and magnify crime-scene photos--a technique that enables them to examine minute marks on door locks. The probe is still hobbled by tensions between Hunter's office and the Boulder police. For six weeks the cops refused to share the DNA findings with the D.A., making them available only last week...
...scopes in mid-June. Even more telling, Moore reported, the corner reflectors were put together with beams made of balsa wood and coated with "Elmer's-type" glue (to strengthen them). Also, he noted, the New York toy company that manufactured the reflectors had reinforced the seams with leftover tape that Moore recalled had "pinkish-purple abstract flower-like designs"--markings that Major Marcel could have interpreted as hieroglyphics...
