...they are what made him Speaker. GOPAC was a major force in giving last year's election its national theme. Through its seminars and training tapes, it helped G.O.P. candidates hone their messages, which, not so incidentally, were Gingrich's as well. Among his other endeavors are a think tank, the Progress and Freedom Foundation; a syndicated talk show called The Progress Report; and his 10-week college course, "Renewing American Civilization." Even with all he needs to get done in the first 100 days, Gingrich plans to shut down House business by 3 p.m. each Friday so that...

...their citizens. From Chile to Greece to Indonesia, we have provided military aid to governments that crush political dissent and brutally repress populist movements. All across the globe, American-made tear gas and riot-control vehicles have been used to disperse peaceful demonstrations. American made rifles, explosives and tank have been accessory to the murder of innocent people who dare to criticize their governments and to the ousting of democratically elected officials. Hassain, who never awoke from his coma, died the next morning...

...wild allegations have proved to be an effective method of grabbing the attention of the disaffected and recruiting them into militias. Most experts agree that the groups are multiplying and their membership is expanding, though estimates vary. Chip Berlet, who studies militias for Political Research Associates, a Massachusetts think tank, says militia units exist in 30 states, including large organizations in Michigan, Montana and Ohio, and he suspects there may be units in 10 other states. Although there may be hundreds of thousands of people who identify with the patriot movement, Berlet estimates that only about 10,000 people have...
