...classic cops-and-robbers tale, but with a film-noir twist. Ovando was railroaded by the police, who had planted a gun to get the conviction. But no one believed Ovando until a dishonest cop, Rafael Perez, talked. Faced with 14 years in prison for stealing cocaine from a police lockup, Perez opted to bargain for a lighter sentence by delivering up his fellow officers. That was five months ago, and Perez has hardly stopped talking since. He has filled 2,000 transcript pages with accounts of cops faking evidence, testifying against innocent people and generally acting like criminals themselves...

...Magic Flute, written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart shortly before his death in 1791, features the tale of Prince Tamino's (Sonny Elizaondo '00) quest to find Pamina (Tonia D'Amelio '00), his love. The rather basic storyline is complicated by Pamina's evil mother, the Queen of the Night (Tamara R. ...2Gether," which airs repeatedly on MTV all this week, is supposed to be an inspired spoof of bubblegum boy band pop--a rags to riches tale of five boys picked from the cowfields to become bonafide pop superstars. Whether the show itself portends the end of the Backstreet Boys, 'NSync, Boyzone etc. remains to be seen, but the soundtrack certainly lives up to all the hype. "2Gether," the opening track, sounds just like every opening track on a boy band album--the whole "We've Got it Going On" thing. Another day, another boy band, you might think--until...

...intricate web of lies and betrayal that keeps the audience guessing to the very end. Rudy has to figure out a way to convince his captors that he really has Nick's knowledge (even though he doesn't) while planning a way to escape. It's a dizzying tale of greed and deceit in which no character is free from suspicion. And yes, backs are stabbed left and right...

Ventura's departure from Reform's ranks is only the latest chapter in the predictable tale of fruitless fights for respect by third parties. Reform earned an astonishing 19% of the vote in the 1992 presidential race. But after founder ROSS PEROT's far worse finish in the 1996 presidential contest, the party seemed doomed--an antideficit party in a budget-surplus world. Ventura's 1998 gubernatorial win gave Reform new life and its first major officeholder, but there was no honeymoon. Ventura and Perot eyed each other with suspicion; the two have spoken only twice in their lives. Ventura...
