...easy to understand, since Saddam has proclaimed himself a successor to Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylonian King who enslaved the Israelites of old. That makes it deceptively easy for prophecy mongers to identify Iraq with Babylon. Somewhat awkwardly, it also undercuts a long- standing Protestant tradition that this symbol of corruption refers to the Church of Rome...

...most visible symbol of the U.S.'s technological edge -- those pinpoint strikes on Iraqi targets -- actually represents some fairly straightforward bombing. The key technology is a simple laser detector on the nose of a glide bomb that is electronically linked to adjustable fins in the bomb's tail. All the pilot has to do is point a pencil-thin laser beam at his target and push a button. ...animals that roam out of Yellowstone Park, deplete the forage and interfere with the cattle grazing on the surrounding public lands. Last week the battle raged in the courts, as animal- rights activists lost -- at least for now -- a fight to block another season of slaughter of the very symbol of the U.S. Department of the Interior: the American bison...
