Last night's events, giving Harvard swimming enthusiasts their first taste of real first-class competition, provided thrills galore. Ruddy, the Columbia crack long-distance man, provided the major thrill of the evening by defeating his chief rivals Clapp, of Stanford and Ault, of Michigan, in a grilling furlong swim. All three men had already put on stellar exhibitions in trial heats of the 440, and yet they battled through to a hair-breadth finish in the 220. Ruddy was the winner, followed by Clapp, while Ault fell behind in the last stages of the race...
...events on both days will be the same, including the 50-yard, a 100-yard, and a 200-yard swim, as well as a 100-yard back stroke and 200-yard breast stroke contest. The diving will be judged on four required and four optional dives. The dormitory or fraternity whose entrants amass the largest number of points through placing in the various events will be awarded the meet. On each day there will be a 100-yard relay, four pick-up teams of four men on a side, with the winners slated to appear in the new pool...
...performance in New Haven on Saturday of George Kojac, captain of the powerful Rutgers team, has been closely watched in Harvard swimming circles. The former Olympic star was nosed out by inches in the 50-yard free style by Captain Howland of Yale, forcing the Ell star to a new record of 23 1-5 seconds. Kojas atoned for this first defeat in an intercollegiate race by trimming Howland in the 100-yard swim, in which he was clocked at 52 4-5 seconds, and by his victory in the 220-yard race, when he lowered the intercollegiate association record...
