Anthologies serve as our means of determining the representative poets of an age. Of course Lonsdale's edition still includes the poetry of the most renowned eighteenth century poets such as Pope, Swift, Johnson, and Blake. Yet the new edition also includes a wealth of posey from more obscure pens. Included in Lonsdale's volume are poems from people of all walks of life including women peasants, and the always elusive Anonymous. The anthology offers a more representative sampling of poems--Lonsdale includes 230 to Smith's 137--and a better feeling for the people of the time...
Tokyo said it would unveil a more comprehensive and detailed plan of action in July, but U.S. businessmen doubt that swift and sweeping changes are in store. "This is just more rhetoric," said John McDonnell, a group vice president for the Electronic Industries Association. "Old habits will die hard," agreed Chairman Edson Spencer of Honeywell, the Minneapolis-based computer company. An American official based in Japan called Nakasone's speech a "big yawn...
Technological progress and strong economic growth in such industrial nations as the U.S. and Japan have been spurred by the swift spread of information made possible by computers. In a swift and stiff follow-up punch, the Pentagon declared that it was temporarily barring G.E. from any new military contracts. As if that were not enough, the Pentagon disclosed that it was taking another "exceptional action" against the company, demanding that it voluntarily return what the Defense Department considers excess profits collected...
...Monty Python. The setting is the third largest island in the world, a fetid, fiercely overgrown jungle seething with carnivorous fauna and suspicious tribes. The protagonists are two British greenhorns with minimal survival skills. Poet James Fenton, 35, likes to spend his spare time reading the poems of Swift in a canoe. Narrator Redmond O'Hanlon, 37, is a literary naturalist who admits before embarking on the 1983 expedition, "The nearest I had ever come to a tropical rain-forest, after all, was in the Bodleian Library." Actually, he edges a bit closer when he consults some old Borneo hands...
