...bizarre collection of characters, truly worthy of O'Connor, whose novella magically integrates the commonplace and the violent. But without the superb cast assembled by Huston and Fitzgerald, Wise Blood might have been as lifeless as Haze's Church Without Christ. Instead, the cast brings to the screen and earnestness we expect only of top-rank stage actors. There are no holes, no weak links, only simple excellence...

...Presume not that I am the thing I was." Jon Finch is also good as Henry IV, who has won a crown but lost his peace of mind. The greatest honors must go to David Giles. It is probably no accident that he directed all three of these superb productions, as well as the equally fine Richard...

...CONCEITED performance of Sam Neill as Beecham makes Harry and Sybylla's love less credible. He peers from underneath his broad-rimmed hats as if posing for Gentlemen's Quarterly. His one-dimensional and completely uninspired performance clashes with the superb acting of the other characters. Robert Grubb as Hawdon is especially outstanding as Sybylla's awkward suitor, and Pat Kennedy--who plays Beecham's stodgy Aunt Gussie--is an archetypal proponent of Vicotrian mores. Don McAlpine, the director of photography, in a sense presents the most stellar supporting performance. McAlpine's love for the Australian landscape builds...

...ruins of all the great European civilizations ought to have taught Shaw that. Revivals, too, may prove fragile. This one shows tensile strength. Director Stephen Porter always holds up a steady mirror to a playwright's inner vision, never more precisely than in Major Barbara. His cast is superb-Bosco's polished diabolism as Undershaft, Kennedy's valiantly wounded purity as Barbara, Jon De Vries' scruffily belligerent ruffianism as one of the undeserving poor...

...work was superb. There was none of the outrageous improvisation that marks Sellers' acting when he feels a project is going badly. "I was amazed at the discretion with which he handled the part," says Co-Star Melvyn Douglas. "Never was there a suggestion of having overblown any sense of it." Adds Richard Dysart, who played a doctor: "The texture of that man's work! He gave Hal Ashby two or three different characters?not that varied, but different. I began to see that there was a through line for each, that they were consistent." Ashby thus had not just...
