Speaker of these fighting words in Boston last week was no underfed Communist on a soap box in the Common, no overfed American Federation of Labor official from State headquarters, but First Assistant Secretary of Labor Edward Francis McGrady, addressing a rally of unionized telephone operators. What stung this strong language from Labor's dandified McGrady was the double punch which Federal courts had just handed NRA's collective bargaining clause in Delaware (see p. 15), its wage fixing provisions in Kentucky...
...attack yesterday against the colleges that turned down Federal "subsidization" of students, an attack that was a virtual accusation of snobbery. The University authorities have chosen the first answer, silence; a few days ago we presented what seemed to us to be Yale's theory on the matter; now, stung a little by this most unpleasant of charges, we are tempted by the eye-for-an-eye outlet. ...their eminent psychologists have pointed out, few peoples suffer from such raging inferiority complexes or are so easily stung by foreign criticism as the Germans. Last week there was real pain at Hitler Youth headquarters in Berlin. The President, stung to rage as never before, brought suit and was awarded 800 marks ($185) for defamation from the imp who is now Minister of Propaganda & Public Enlightenment Dr. Paul Joseph Goebbels. Last week by a supreme irony, it was Dr. Goebbels who, speaking over a nationwide hookup one morning, broke...
...TIME never said another thing from now on, the remarks in the July 2 issue regarding the average college-bred woman being a "flop" as a wife, ought to cause the renewal of a lot of subscriptions. Keep it up. Maybe some of us chaps who have been stung will get a break. Anyhow, we are fed up on a college-bred wife whose remaining asset of her college days consists of a taste for punk cigarets plus a tarnished complexion and an insistence to short-circuit any and all opinions contrary to her own by espousing a look...
