...sharp letter from Dr. Ernest Fullerton Cook, chairman of the revision committee of the U. S. Pharmacopoeia and the dead man's friend. Dr. Cook's letter reminded every one that it was just to prevent such accidents that the Pharmacopoeia 16 years ago laid down strict rules for the preparation of bichloride tablets. Bichloride of mercury (corrosive mercuric chloride, corrosive sublimate), deadly poison,* is used to preserve wood and museum specimens, to kill germs, insects, rodents and other animals. It is also used for embalming, tanning, printing textiles, dyeing furs, purifying gold, etching metals. As an antiseptic...
...that leads to futile bickering over details. The majority of those present have acquired their profound knowledge of affairs by studious cramming of text books and outline magazines; still more have never so much as visited their constituencies; and all are forced to comply in their discussions to the strict limitations imposed by the two day period and the carefully prearranged program. If referees actually disqualify every man who breaks the rule which prohibits striking and slugging, such playing will under normal conditions soon come...
Heretofore Catholics marrying heretics or infidels have obtained dispensations by solemnly promising that their offspring would be raised in strict Catholicism. Because these guarantees have often been disregarded, the new law from Vatican City states that persons seeking dispensation must now give actual proof that they will be able to carry out their intentions. The fact that secular law may hamper or prevent education of children in the Church will not be accepted as an excuse. It is a "great horror to innocent souls" to have the law of dispensation "rendered impotent." Offending Catholics will be unchurched until they indicate...
