Following its completion in 1700, the building led a comparatively sedate existence until the Revolutionary War, when General Washington quartered 240 troops there, and the New England Chronicle and Essex Gazette were printed within its walls. Apparently the War was too much for Stoughton's unsubstantial construction, for crumbling masonry necessitated the destruction of the building...

...both the College and the Commonwealth found themselves in straitened financial circumstances, no attempt was made to build a new edifice on the site until the General Court authorized a state-wide lottery in 1794 to raise money for the building.
