Kirk Douglas, as Spur, is appealingly folksy, despite a poor makeup job that leaves him with a Clouseau-like costume nose. He is equally convincing in his dual role as the rancher Harrison, capturing the character's stiff formality and paternal desire to raise his way-ward daughter as "a lady." Young Burlinson, with his impish smile and refreshing honesty, is certainly a find, and Jack Thompson, who will seem familiar for his role as the defense attorney in "Breaker Morant," plays a half-cowboy, "half-bloodhound" tracker with panache...
...criticized peculiarity--the apparent central character disappears two acts before final curtain, leaving the focus of the play where it has been hovering all along, on Brutus. Director Gavin Cameron-Webb clearly follows this school and gives it an extra push; Joe Gargiulo as Caesar is almost a caricature, stiff and monarchical with a booming voice. He flat-out yells a good portion of his lines, but the exaggeration seems called for: it fits the mood...
...Limitation Talks (SALT I), however, the Soviets accepted sharp restrictions on ABMs. They were moved to do so not just by the philosophical wisdom of the American argument, but by the strength of the American bargaining position. The U.S. had started to build an ABM of its own, despite stiff political opposition, so the Soviets had to ponder the implication of unregulated competition as an alternative to negotiated restraint. They also realized the apparent impossibility of an effective ABM. The 1972 SALT I treaty limiting ABMs is the only nuclear arms control agreement still legally in force between the superpowers...
...Soldier by an unknown Neapolitan hand (all attributions having failed so far), which inspired Manet's Dead Toreador. The painting is a link between Caravaggio's shadow-theater and, through Salvator Rosa, the world of 19th century romanticism. It shows a young man in half-armor lying stiff and composed on the floor of a cave (some mountain charnel-house, perhaps) surrounded by rainy twilight and the glimmer of bones, with a curl of smoke still issuing from an extinguished votive lamp. A vanitas? A more personal lamentation? Impossible to say; yet there is more real feeling...
...million West Germans, or more than 10% of the working population, are now unemployed. The public sector is deeply in the red: the combined federal, state and local budget deficit for 1983 is expected to exceed $31 billion. The antidote that Kohl offered on the campaign trail was a stiff dose of government austerity coupled with incentives to foster free enterprise...
