...unfair. Although The Touch is transparently aiming for the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon audience and features some awfully familiar flying kicks, we have to be grateful that it avoids the cello solemnity of that blockbuster. Rather than high art, director Peter Pau aims for the high spirits of Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones films, with their roguish heroes, cultured antagonists and mytho-archaeological quests. Still, at least Spielberg threw in the occasional Arabic subtitle, thereby adding a bit of real atmosphere?a quality The Touch sadly lacks despite its $20 million budget. Pau and Yeoh may have hoped...
...climactic face-off. "I love anything I can get into and do somethin' stupid," says Xander. Kids will line up to watch that somethin' this weekend. Adults, perplexed at Diesel's surly stardom, need to recall this: Hollywood once made an action hero of a lug named Steven Seagal...
...July, Springsteen and the E Street Band were holed up in a small theater on the Fort Monmouth Army base, cramming for a 46-city tour that starts Aug. 7. During a break backstage, the band members were playing their consummate blue-collar roles. Guitarist "Little" Steven Van Zandt says he has to move out of his Eighth Avenue apartment in Manhattan after 20 years. "The place is fallin' apart." Drummer Max Weinberg suggests Steve check out a place in the legendary Upper West Side apartment building the Dakota; Van Zandt looks as if he has just been told...
After a few epic-size Hollywood films (Erin Brockovich, Traffic, Ocean's Eleven), director Steven Soderbergh has gone small. Full Frontal, his terrific new movie, is intimate and innovative. It boasts rules of Dogma-like rigor: the budget was $2 million; the shoot took just three weeks; most of it was photographed (by the director) on video; the stars were responsible for their own makeup; no limos or trailers were allowed. He also constructed a Chinese box of a film-within-a-film-within-a-film. The result is his liveliest experiment since the strenuously weird Schizopolis six years...
South Korea and Taiwan are generally thought to be the most promising markets in Asia. Through tax incentives, South Korea has been promoting credit cards, luxury goods and travel--creating a free-spending middle class to boost domestic demand. "Korean companies have streamlined and have very little debt," notes Steven Schoenfeld, head of international equities at Barclay's Global Investors. Some of the best values are in Taiwan. Aquico Wen, portfolio manager at Citigroup Asset Management, especially likes the nation's fast-growing electronics industry, which includes world-class outsourcers like Taiwan Semiconductor and United Microelectronics. Two good Asian funds...
