...University Freshman rowing has been discontinued. Candidates will be called out after the mid-year period and work on the machines and in the tank will be kept up until the river is open. Under the direction of Coaches Vail and Stephenson, six graded crews, three from each boathouse, have been on the river daily since the inter-dormitory bumping races. In spite of unseasonable rowing weather, the men have worked hard and the attendance has been very regular. Both the first crews are very strong eights and have developed rapidly during the last ten days. The coaches have watched the individual men, and after the race today eight men, picked from all the crews, will be asked to join the University crew squad in the spring...
Long hard rows with frequent spurts have been given to the graded crews during the past week, in preparation for the race next Friday. The men are still hanging badly at the catch, but Coaches Vail and Stephenson expect another week will do away with the ragged work of the more inexperienced men. As the result of a race in the basin yesterday between the first and second Weld crews, which was won by the second crew, there will be several changes in the orders of these boats today...
...were on the river yesterday, practicing for the graded crew race to be held a week from tomorrow, weather permitting, over the one and seven-eighths mile course in the basin. The work at both boat clubs has been handicapped by the irregularity of attendance, but Coaches Vail and Stephenson have corrected most of the individual faults and from now on attention will be centred in developing a clean, effective stroke. Both the first crews are rowing in good form, and will doubtless furnish a close race next week...
