...magazine has defied convention, punctured myths and helped to mold public opinion on women's issues with a sharp, witty and often bristling style. Despite its influence, however, the monthly (circ. 480,000) has rarely turned a profit. Turning to the Aussies for help, Co-Founders Gloria Steinem and Patricia Carbine announced they will sell the publication to the John Fairfax company, a major Australian communications conglomerate, for an undisclosed price believed to be as much as $15 million...
...commercials for call-girl "escort services" and for Steve, a gaunt guy who poses in his undies, gives his pertinent measurements and phone number and caters to all comers. You could hear the show's executive producer, Al Goldstein, mouth off on any subject that grazed his mind: Gloria Steinem ("great legs"), a play he'd seen in London ("Skip it. Miss it. Crud"), health violations at local restaurants. On Midnight Blue and other sex shows, for the basic cable subscription price, you could watch all this and more...
Though many feminists oppose all X-rated material, some seem willing to accept couples films, at least in principle. Elizabeth L. Wurtzel correctly describes this biography--half photographs--as a "coffee table decoration". As such, the book continues a tradition of exploiting Monroe as an erotic object and as an object of greedy curiosity. On the other hand, one may consider this book...
...Steinem also focuses on Monroe's biggest flaw and her ultimate downfall: her desperate need for love. Born illegitimate to an emotionally unstable mother who was to die in a mental institute, and later shuttled from foster homes to an arranged teenage marriage, Norma Jeane was to spend the rest of her life in search of the paternal love she never got. Steinem points a critical feminist finger at the Freudian psychoanalysts who could not help Monroe solve her problems because of the inherent sexism of Freud's theories. As a last resort, they prescribed pills, a move which proved...
