...many child killings have ended in recent years--with mournful speeches and eulogies and civic burial mounds made up of heart-shaped balloons, poems, and stuffed animals staring blankly into space. At least that is how it will end for Kayla. For the boy, who can tell? The state will probably take custody of him, his brother and five-year-old sister. It is possible that an enlightened environment somewhere will produce a wholly different child, and just as possible that the wounds go too deep and that he will emerge into adulthood knowing perfectly the meaning and consequences...

"The book's strength is basically how sane it is," says Vowell, who adds, however, that reading the 884-page manual had her "completely, overly aware of the state of my bathroom." Vowell comes to a commonsensical compromise: "I like sad stories and tough topics, but I want my living quarters to show some sense of joy." In the article, the woman who only eight years ago published the pseudo-scandalous book Sex discusses the mellowing effects of motherhood: "I've been naked in every state and country... I've dated the NBA...I dealt with my sexual rebellion. I worked it out of my system." Which no doubt makes her a more appreciative audience for the magazine's Buyer's Guide to state-of-the-art electric ranges...
