Olympic Flop. Born in Kingston, 22-year-old Sprinter Johnson ran the 100 in 11.5 sec. at the age of twelve, and caught the eye of Jamaican Track Star Herb McKenley. The ex-Olympian painstakingly tutored Johnson for six years, coached him to Jamaican high school records of 9.6 sec. in the 100, 21.1 sec. in the 220, and 50.7 sec. in the 440. In 1959 he entered Bakersfield (Calif.) College, and cut his running times to a creditable 9.4 sec. in the 100, 20.6 in the 220. Unhappy with his poor showing in the 1960 Olympics-he started sloppily...
Breaking quickly, Four and Twenty drove for the lead, but lost it to Globemaster, a sprinter that had beaten Carry Back by 3¼ lengths in New York's $86,000 Wood Memorial. Moreland also runs the quarter mile and the low hurdles and he could win them all. In the 440, he will have stiff competition from Holzel of Dartmouth, a good sub-49 man in that event...
Tomorrow, the championships in the one-meter dive, 200-yard butterfly, 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 220-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, and 400-yard freestyle relay will be decided. Of particular interest will be Crimson sprinter Bruce Hunter's attempt to take the 50 crown away from Charlie Brown of Dartmouth, last year's upset winner...
...addition, there seems to be a limitless supply of sub-52 sprinters. Dillworth, a most consistent point-winner for the squad, has done a 51.8 100 split in a relay, as has Denis Hunter, Bruce's brother. Wood is also a fine sprinter as is Elliot Miller, the fastest of them all over a flat hundred, in 50 plus...
