...week shy of his 21st birthday in June, Shia LaBeouf spent a morning learning to drive bizarre, top-secret vehicles alongside Harrison Ford. This fantasy gig started, as Hollywood fairy tales often do, with a summons to Steven Spielberg's office two months earlier. "Steven said, 'You ever seen Indiana Jones?'" the boyish-looking actor recounts, while chain smoking outside the Burbank, Calif., strip mall where he buys his daily Boston Market chicken and Robek's fruit smoothie ("The parking lot of dreams," LaBeouf calls his suburban stomping ground). "I said, 'Of course I've seen Indiana Jones.' He said...

...keeps doing it, and keeps demanding nearly as much of his actors as of himself. He hypnotized the actors in Heart of Glass. He cast Bruno S., who had spent decades in mental institutions, as the star of The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser and Stroszek. When Nicholson backed out of Fitzcarraldo, Herzog got Jason Robards, who contracted amoebic dysentery and was forced to quit the shoot. (Mick Jagger, another member of the cast, also had to leave.) The youths show no respect even to older gangs: several months earlier Paea tried to break up a territorial dispute between the Killer Beez and the local Black Power chapter. "It was like something out of the movies," he says. "I heard they were all down at this park...

...Today I feel French, surely an ersatz Frenchman but nevertheless French. I sneer at fat American tourists with their oversized maps, mispronouncing Notre Dame and screaming from their tourboats as if they were riding a rollercoaster at Walt Disney World. I have spent many hours explaining to my French friends that a lot of Americans actually hate George Bush, but my ardent desire to defend the U.S. against all slights is waning by the day. I feel embarrassed when my accent betrays me as an American, and defiantly continue to speak French even when addressed in English...
