...children were randomly assigned to consume one of three fruit drinks daily: one contained the amount of dye and sodium benzoate typically found in a British child's diet, a second drink had a lower concentration of the additives, and a third was additive-free. All the children spent a week drinking each of the three mixtures, which looked and tasted alike. During each weeklong period, teachers and parents, who did not know which drink the kids were getting, used a variety of standardized behavior-evaluation tools - some observational and one computer-based - to size up such qualities as restlessness...
...career. As a stills photographer for movie companies in the 1960s, he was one of thousands of anonymous technicians in the service of a burgeoning entertainment industry. As the publisher and editor of Photo Tech magazine in the 1970s, and of Photo Art magazine from 1980, his days were spent deciding how best to present the work of other, usually less able, photographers. He didn't seriously think of promoting his own name and work until Photo Art ceased publication in the early 1990s, costing Yau his job but giving him the time to go through the thousands of photographs...

What if, like the radio host who gets fat but commits to losing weight, the moralizers were trying through their "pro-family" endeavors to expiate their lustful sins? You may think they are wrong about homosexuality (I do), but that doesn't make them hypocrites...
...whose testimony may be the most important may not be Petraeus, the anticipated star of the show, but the other guy, Crocker, a much admired diplomat who has spent his entire career in the region. If Petraeus has seen some victories, Crocker has known nothing but defeat in his dealings with the failed government of Nouri al-Maliki-dealings that mostly involve trying to get the Shi'ites to treat the Sunnis fairly and stop fighting among themselves. As a result, Crocker may have a better handle on the most important questions facing the U.S. effort in Iraq...
