Ohio State University veterinarian Michael Podell has spent the past two years infecting cats with the feline version of HIV, shooting them up with methamphetamines (commonly known as speed), cutting into their brain tissue to examine their responses and then killing and dissecting them. His goal: to explore what happens when HIV-positive humans abuse drugs. But animal-rights activists did everything they could to stop the research, and last week, when Podell announced he was quitting the project and leaving the university, they declared victory. ...Hiddink discarded the gerontocracy for a performance-based system that nurtured players like 21-year-old speed demon Park Ji Sung, who provided some of the juice in Korea's fluid offense. Cognizant that his inexperienced squad could not match the artistry of, say, a Brazil, the former coach of Real Madrid and the Dutch national team prescribed a punishing training regimen that would enable the Koreans to simply outlast greater soccer powers. Seasoned players like captain Hong who couldn't keep up with the rigorous practices were threatened with dismissal, much to the horror of team officials used...

...That's not the way many international coaches work it. Former U.S. and current China coach Bora Milutinovic, says Meola, makes players adjust to his system. Both approaches can win, but Arena's produced spectacular results last week. Earlier this year at Salt Lake City, the nation's top hope Kim Dong Sung was disqualified for blocking a U.S. skater. In a move that most Koreans consider fixed, the American, Apolo Anton Ohno, took the gold instead. He's since been voted the most unwelcome foreigner in a Korean poll. When Korean midfielder Ahn Jung Hwan headed the ball home in the 77th minute of the U.S.-Korea match to tie the score 1-1 and keep...
