...which these machines, according to Schaeffer, "are not yet capable of performing accurately." ¶ Coagulation tests at one laboratory were conducted on blood samples collected in special tubes supplied to doctors by the lab; the tubes contained oxalate, a chemical agent which prevents coagulation. ¶ For the sake of speed, some labs resorted to "sink tests," simply poured samples down a drain and blandly reported "negative" results to the doctors who had requested analysis...

After years as a defensive team, the varsity showed signs of becoming a hit-'em longer-and-harder outfit against Columbia. Fullbacks Sandy Cortesi and Tim Mor-had trouble clearing the ball, and developed a new weakness--powerless kicking. But they both have the speed to recover after a mistake...

Track captain Fred Howard, in the fourth cross country race of his life, could be the key figure. If the Yale course is built for speed, Howard should be in the running all the way, since he is one of the Crimson's top performers at every distance from 440 yards to five miles. The big-hearted senior joined the team after its opening 22-33 loss to Cornell, and has been a large part of the difference during the varsity's win streak...

Prodigious Appetite. The most important items in Courier iB are five tape recorders, one of them handling voice and the other four (some are standbys) recording and transmitting high-speed Teletype messages. Soon after the satellite went into orbit, it recorded a taped message from President Eisenhower that was sent up to it while it was passing over the Army's communications laboratory at Fort Monmouth, N.J. When Courier iB approached Puerto Rico, a Signal Corps radio at Salinas commanded it to repeat the President's words. This it duly did, and the message was forwarded by conventional...

Tape Trick. The words are stored on magnetic tape in highly condensed code, and they race down from space so fast that 720 high-speed Teletype machines would be needed to keep up with them. The Signal Corps, of course, has no such Teletype brigade. Its trick is to record the satellite's signals directly on tape, then slow the tape so that normal machines can deal with the signals at their leisure. Beyond this operation, the satellite can be instructed to receive and transmit any message simultaneously. This permits communication on line-of-sight microwaves between places such...
