...University nine defeated the Pennsylvania team on Saturday by a score of 6 to 0, in a game that was rather uninteresting from a spectacular point of view. As neither team was able to hit the opposing pitcher, a pitchers' battle resulted, in which Clarkson proved to be far superior to either Devlin or Groves. The foul strike rule was used, making the game short...

...nine men, and giving no bases on balls. This brilliant work in the box, furthermore was supported by perfect fielding on the part of the whole University team, so that only the three Brown men who made hits reached first and only one succeeded in reaching second. The most spectacular play of the game was a well executed double play by Coolidge, Matthews and Randall. The one discouraging feature of the work was the batting, only four hits being made during the entire game. The team was facing, it is true, an unusually good pitcher, and part of the weakness...

Great attention has been paid to scenic effects. The costumes have been designed by D. D. L. McGrew '03 and executed by Ware of Salem, and a number of new and effective electrical devices have been introduced which will add much to the spectacular part of the performance. The staging of the play is, as usual, under the direction of James Gilbert, with R. W. Child '03 as undergraduate stage manager. To the ballets, under the charge of Miss Wyman of Boston, particular attention has been paid. The scenes, laid in India give a good opportunity for striking contrast...

...University of Michigan won the Western football championship yesterday by defeating the University of Minnesota, 23 to 6. The playing, although ragged, was marked by great flerceness, while several spectacular features made the game a most interesting one. Michigan won through superior team work, by which the eleven scored twice in the first half on touchdowns by Maddock and Heston, and twice in the second on a 30 yard run by Heston, and a difficult field goal by Sweeley. Minnesota's only touchdown was made by Flynn on a tumble at the opening of the second half...

...yards straight through the line for a touchdown, and there were others similarly executed which, if not stopped by the man in the backfield, would have had the same result. With the exception of these plays and a few punts of extraordinary length, there was little of the spectacular. For the most part, the game was a long series of rushes with scarcely any variation from the accepted style of attack--the tackle-back formation -- which has come into use in all the important games of recent years. A few end runs were tried by both sides, but always with...
