...Europe and world. Vinh Prag Arhus, Denmark Thanks for this fascinating article. As a London-based Cornishman, I'm surprised that you omitted the Celtic links between Cornwall and Brittany. Nor did you include the Catalans, whose domain stretches from around Béziers in France to Barcelona in Spain. The more that globalized trade and political union try to make us homogeneous, the more need there is for a stronger local personal identity. Even living in London, I glory in my Cornish roots. I travel widely, but the only place where tears well up is when I cross...
Down 2-5 in the second set to Spain's Tommy Robredo yesterday, James Blake's U.S. Open romp appeared over. Robredo had already won the first set, and Blake, the man who outran the quickest tennis player on earth, Rafael Nadal, in a stunning upset on Saturday, had clay feet on the hard court surface. Blake's best shot, a blazing forehand, was a tad slow. Even his rowdy cheering section in Suite 236 of Arthur Ashe Stadium, clad in baby-blue t-shirts and self-dubbed the "J-Block," seemed a bit deflated...
...from Karl Cardinal Lehmann of Germany, who said, "The girls in St. Peter's Square who cheer the Pope have the Pill in their pockets," amazed me. I have been a priest for more than 20 years and have worked with youths in the U.S. as well as in Spain. If there is one single issue that made young people crazy about Pope John Paul II during the past quarter-century, it was precisely his stand against the birth-control pill. Flat rejection of the Pill means being committed to true life-giving love. Taking the Pill would do away...
Severe drought in southern Europe this summer is taking a heavy toll on farmers in Spain, Portugal and parts of France and Italy. With rainfall levels far below normal, many crops, from wheat to lettuce, are suffering. Water is now officially rationed in two-thirds of France and much of Spain; some Spanish provinces have even closed or restricted swimming pools and public fountains. The European Commission estimates that grain production will drop by about 28 million tons, or about 10%, in the four countries, with output of some types of wheat down by 25%. Olive and vegetable growers...
...that the Blake was surprised by his 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 win over No. 19 seed Tommy Robredo of Spain. No, the former Harvard All-American—he went pro in 1999, after two years with the Crimson—had already proven himself capable of a big win on Saturday, when he knocked off No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal in three commanding sets...
