...FAST FORWARD TO THANKSGIVING 1972. Back in New York for the holiday my freshman year in college, I go see the New Riders of the Purple Sage - sort of a rockin'-country adjunct to the Grateful Dead - at the Academy of Music. Perhaps my proximity to the mirror ball overhead clouds my judgment, but it is my distinct impression that my skull has been imploded by the virtuoso performance of Buddy Cage, the Riders' pedal steel player. ...favorite cartoon character with a ballot identical to the one used in Palm Beach. Actually, the ballot McGee used was a tad harder than its Palm Beach analogue. The two columns for best cartoon candidate got squeezed onto one page, not two, and they weren't separated by any sort of neat central punch space. But don't tell that to the dazed and confused in Palm Beach! Out of 74 fourth-graders, 74 verified they had correctly expressed their "will" the first time around...

Statisticians put the probability that fewer than 1743 (the margin between Texas Gov. George W. Bush and Gore before this first recount) of the disputed Buchanan votes were meant...

...Lauderdale. Venus insists that within a few weeks she will land a real part-time job in fashion. And within three years, the sisters plan on designing their own lines, with Venus making pret-a-porter and Serena doing evening wear--and neither doing sportswear. "Right now we're sort of famous, and while you have a name, you might want to use it," says Venus. "We're going to school now, and we're seen out there looking fashionable...

...Angels in ways that are titillating to adolescent males, yet give their dates the impression that something inspiring is being said about female empowerment. It is, on both counts, just a tease. The best you can say for this version of Charlie's Angels is that it retains a sort of chipper, eerie good nature as it wastes the studio's money and our time...
